Monitoring indoor air quality in public buildings has been mandatory since January 1, 2023, for childcare facilities (daycare centers, schools, educational or vocational training establishments, daycare centers). It will be mandatory from January 1, 2025, for other establishments concerned (nursing homes, medical-social and prison facilities, etc.).

A four-point regulation

a. Verification of the accessibility and maneuverability of openings
b. Verification of the proper functioning of ventilation devices
c. Direct reading measurement of carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration in indoor air (application guide)

a. Identification and reduction of sources of pollutants
b. Maintenance of ventilation systems and ventilation equipment
c. Reduction of occupant exposure

a. Pollutants to be measured: formaldehyde, benzene, CO2.

b. Sampling and analysis carried out by an organization accredited by the French Accreditation Committee (Cofrac).
c. Collection in a CSTB database.

Annual evaluation of ventilation systems is a mandatory step in monitoring indoor air quality in establishments open to the public.

Annual assessment of ventilation systems

Conducting an examination of each item selected in the assessment strategy
Conducting direct readings of carbon dioxide concentrations in indoor air in accordance with the conditions defined by order of the ministers responsible for the environment, health, and construction.

Self-diagnostic

Self-assessment of indoor air quality has become a mandatory step that must be carried out or updated regularly, at least every four years.

This diagnosis covers:

  • Identification and means of reducing sources of pollutant emissions, whether they originate from materials, equipment, or activities carried out;
  • Maintenance of the establishment’s ventilation systems and air conditioning equipment;
  • Reducing occupants’ exposure to pollutants resulting in particular from construction and cleaning activities

To this end, four themes are proposed:

– Development and monitoring of an action plan
